Dixieland
Dixieland music is, perhaps, one of the earliest forms of jazz. Arising from earlier music forms, including the blues, ragtime, and French marching music, Dixieland started as New Orleans music, and some of its most famous and instantly recognizable classics are forever associated with the Big Easy When the Saints Go Marching In, Basin Street Blues, and others. Starting at the turn of the 20th century, Dixieland was initially characterized by musicians such as the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, a platinum-selling artist as early as 1917. However, musical titan Louis Armstrong quickly came to dominate the popular association with the genre.
Dixieland, musically, is characterized by the articulation of a melody by a dominant brass instrument (usually the trumpet, Armstrong’s signature instrument), followed by improvisations on this melody by the remainder of the orchestra. The New Orleans Jazz Festival remains to this day a mecca for Dixieland and traditional jazz or trade jazz enthusiasts, many of whom flock to New Orleans from across the country or even across the world to hear the best Dixieland bands play.
