Keyboard vs Piano
What most people probably think of first when they’re trying to decide whether to get a keyboard or a piano is the difference in price! Let’s face it – one involves a much bigger hit to your wallet than the other. Even a low-end piano will run you over $1000. And once you have it, there’s tuning and repairs to think about too. If you’ve got kids running around, or your area has weather that changes quickly and often, your piano is likely to need some TLC on a pretty regular basis. And that’s on top of whatever you’re already spending on piano lessons.
A keyboard, on the other hand, can run as little as $100. You might even hit the jackpot and find a good deal at a thrift store or on eBay! If you’re really looking to spend a lot of money, though, it’s easy to do so – just look at the most advanced keyboards. While they’re really made with pros in mind, they can cost just as much as a full piano. One of the biggest differences in price comes with a jump in the number of keys. While your first piano lessons might not require you to go outside the 76 keys found on your typical keyboard, advanced playing could require the full 88 keys found on an acoustic piano.
Size is the other elephant in the room (no pun intended!). Acoustic pianos – even the lightest upright pianos – are huge! There’s no getting around it: they’re big, they’re heavy, and they’re a pain in the neck to move. A lot of apartment buildings also don’t let their tenants keep pianos in their apartments, because of the potential to keep other tenants up with your piano lessons or practicing.
